I believe he was an Engineer back in his home country. So, I’m sure as a professional, sailing on a relatively low-cost boat such as Carina, he was able to save and spend frugally…
It is also possible his friends & parents are loaning him some money to get him home – It’s pretty clear he isn’t a rich kid on a yacht by any stretch of the imagination, so, I think chances are he’s living on a terribly low budget, and just living as best he can.

the wind is free – a little boat is cheap. Work a year then sail and live off the land.

Damn. After six months of coastal sailing alone aboard a 27 foot yacht, I wanted nothing more than to have my feet back on solid ground. I think I would die from the stress of being on a 19 for years.
