PHUKET: The Turanor, the first solar-powered boat to attempt a circumnavigation of the globe, is scheduled to moor at Phuket’s Ao Po Marina, on Phuket’s east coast, at about 7:30am tomorrow. The stunning piece of technology and craftmanship, will remain in Phuket until Wednesday and will be visited by a delegation from the Swiss embassy in Thailand on Tuesday. The voyage began 389 days ago — on September 27, 2010 — from Monaco and has been mapped with stopovers along the equator, where the boat can exploit the maximum amount of sunlight as it rounds the Earth. The four-man crew crossed the Atlantic Ocean, navigated the Panama Canal, then sailed the Pacific Ocean and are now heading for the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal, en route to the Mediterranean to complete 57000km of ocean traveling. Dubbed in full the MS Turanor PlanetSolar, the multihull is topped by a large array of photovoltaic solar panels that at full exposure cover an area of 537 square meters. At 31 meters long, 15m wide, reaching a height of 6.1m. and weighing in at 95 tonnes, it is the biggest solar boat ever built, taking 14 months to complete at the Knierim Yacht Club, in Kiel, Germany. The PlanetSolar project began in 2004 with the idea of promoting and investigating sustainable energy sources through future technologies. Raphael Domjan, from Switzerland, is the initiator and expedition leader of PlanetSolar. “The circumnavigation of the boat is to demonstrate the functionality and efficiency of

Puilladobhrain means Pool of the Otter though I suspect Otters have long since gone. This anchorage can often be crowded in the summer but early season in May beginning of June you may be lucky enough to have it to yourself. See www.circumnavigation-uki.co.uk for more information.

Death Valley bicycle ride (Lone Pine to Furnace Creek) during Vin Cox’s Guinness World Record ride. During one of the hotter parts of the fastest ever circumnavigation of the world by bicycle, Vin Cox shares the sights, history, and challenges of the day. This was approximately day 106 of a journey lasting 163 days 6 hours 58 minutes as recognised by the Guinness Book of Records. He cycled 18225.7 miles (that’s nearly 30000 kilometres)! Vin is now giving talks/lectures/speeches about his adventure and organising a new event “The Global Bicycle Race”. The race will encourage people like Vin to all set off around the world at the same time from the same place to let the public share and compare their adventures: start date is Feb 18th 2012 in London, England.

Vince handles a soaking wet task without complaint: He is trying to retrieve a much-needed carabiner from one of the pontoons, in rather rough seas.

This is the first part of the video I shot of the takeoff of the Global Flyer in Salina, KS in 2005, which later became the start of the first solo nonstop circumnavigation of the Earth by Steve Fossett. The actual takeoff in Part 2 is not available anywhere else and wasn’t available to the live media coverage pool upon takeoff. I and only one other person got to stand at the takeoff point as Mr. Fossett began to roll down the runway. To license this footage, please contact Chris at chrisw10 at gmail [dot] com or send Youtube mail.
