In February 2005, Dame Ellen MacArthur stole the record from Joyon, bettering it by 1 day, 8 hours, 35 minutes, 49 seconds aboard her boat, B&Q. Row (Your Ondine Boat) These are two small clips from the 2006 award winning documentary which depicts Julie and Colin Angus’ circumnavigation of the globe by human power which garnered them the National Geographic Adventurers Of The Year award. Christine Leakey wrote the original score to the documentary based on a poem written by Julie’s mother, Helga Wafaei. Christine also obtained title sponsorship for the expedition from Truestar Health, she media managed the expedition from Moscow to Vancouver, organized a fundraising event, created all the graphics for the expedition’s completion and was music producer for the film. Christine feels especially lucky to have heard rich and wonderful ocean stories from Julie via satellite phone as she and Colin crossed from Lisbon, Portugal to Limon, Costa Rica. The solo round-the-world flight was completed in 67 hours and 2 minutes and 38 seconds. The Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer took off for its round-the-world record attempt from Salina Airport, Kansas at 6:47 pm CST on 28 February, 2005. The Paris 63 is a multi-phase project and the dream of Stanley Paris, whose goal is a solo, non-stop, and unassisted and completely green circumnavigation. He will not only be the oldest person to do so but he is also attempting to beat Dodge Morgan’s record of 150 days. The build schedule is a short intense sprint – compressed into 12 months from design to Kiwi Spirit’s launch date of August 2012.

In the autumn of 2004 and again in the spring of 2008 I was able to join two cruises which included Suez Canal transits. In November 2004 I sailed south from Alexandria to Mombasa, Kenya on the 10000-ton, 208-passenger Seabourn Spirit; and in May 2008 I sailed north during an Africa circumnavigation cruise on Holland America Line’s 38000-ton, 793-passenger Prinsendam. The Suez Canal was constructed by forced labor at a cost of USD 100 million over a 10 1/2-year period by Ferdinand de Lesseps’ Universal Company for the Suez Maritime Canal, which was formed in 1858. The canal was opened on November 17, 1869 by the French Empress Eugenie. 163 km (101 miles) long and 600 meters (1968 feet) wide in its narrowest stretch, the canal links the Mediterranean at Port Said to the Red Sea at Suez. With an average transit time of 15 hours, the canal saves ships 11829 km (7350 miles) compared to the circumnavigation of Africa. The Suez Canal, which has no locks, accommodates about 50 ships daily and is capable of handling up to 80 ships in a single day. The current maximum draft allowed is 16 meters (53 feet), and modifications now underway should increase this to 22 meters (72 feet). While ships which displace up to 150000 tons can now transit the canal, after 2010 fully-laden supertankers will also be able to pass. At present supertankers have the option of transferring a portion of their cargo onto an Egyptian boat and then reloading after their canal transit. Incredibly, the …

PHUKET: The Turanor, the first solar-powered boat to attempt a circumnavigation of the globe, is scheduled to moor at Phuket’s Ao Po Marina, on Phuket’s east coast, at about 7:30am tomorrow. The stunning piece of technology and craftmanship, will remain in Phuket until Wednesday and will be visited by a delegation from the Swiss embassy in Thailand on Tuesday. The voyage began 389 days ago — on September 27, 2010 — from Monaco and has been mapped with stopovers along the equator, where the boat can exploit the maximum amount of sunlight as it rounds the Earth. The four-man crew crossed the Atlantic Ocean, navigated the Panama Canal, then sailed the Pacific Ocean and are now heading for the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal, en route to the Mediterranean to complete 57000km of ocean traveling. Dubbed in full the MS Turanor PlanetSolar, the multihull is topped by a large array of photovoltaic solar panels that at full exposure cover an area of 537 square meters. At 31 meters long, 15m wide, reaching a height of 6.1m. and weighing in at 95 tonnes, it is the biggest solar boat ever built, taking 14 months to complete at the Knierim Yacht Club, in Kiel, Germany. The PlanetSolar project began in 2004 with the idea of promoting and investigating sustainable energy sources through future technologies. This was approximately day 106 of a journey lasting 163 days 6 hours 58 minutes as recognised by the Guinness Book of Records. He cycled 18225.7 miles (that’s nearly 30000 kilometres)! Vin is now giving talks/lectures/speeches about his adventure and organising a new event “The Global Bicycle Race”. Endeavour, the magnificent replica of Captain James Cook’s ship, HMB Endeavour, was escorted out of Sydney Harbour by a fleet of Olympic class Laser yachts to mark the vessel’s flagship role in Fremantle during the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships in December. Fremantle will be one of 18 ports that Endeavour will visit as part of a first ever circumnavigation of Australia, heading north from Sydney. Other ports of call in Western Australia include Broome, Exmouth, Geraldton, Bunbury and Albany. Working with the Australian National Maritime Museum, Perth 2011 is a significant event partner in the circumnavigation voyage. As part of the arrangement with the Australian National Maritime Museum, Perth 2011 agreed to charter Endeavour for the three week period of the ISAF Sailing World Championships this December. During the quarter of a century that I’ve lived in Egypt I have always been intrigued to see vessels plying the Suez Canal. Indeed, the ship convoys often appeared to be floating across the desert as if by magic if I was situated far enough away from the canal at the time of sighting. So I’m sure no one will be surprised when I admit that I have long wondered how a local resident could sail through the canal. Unfortunately, I never found an answer to that question. However, in the autumn of 2004 and again in the spring of 2008 I was able to join two international cruises which included Suez Canal transits. In November 2004 I sailed south from Alexandria to Mombasa, Kenya on the 10000-ton, 208-passenger Seabourn Spirit; and in May 2008 I sailed north during an Africa circumnavigation cruise on Holland America Line’s 38000-ton, 793-passenger Prinsendam. The Suez Canal was constructed by forced labor at a cost of USD 100 million over a 10 1/2-year period by Ferdinand de Lesseps’ Universal Company for the Suez Maritime Canal, which was formed in 1858. The canal was opened on November 17, 1869 by the French Empress Eugenie. 163 km (101 miles) long and 600 meters (1968 feet) wide in its narrowest stretch, the canal links the Mediterranean at Port Said to the Red Sea at Suez. With an average transit time of 15 hours, the canal saves ships 11829 km (7350 miles) compared to the circumnavigation of Africa. This video shows the fourth last and fastest ever run for VESTAS SAILROCKET. The boat was retired a few days later. It was the end of a remarkable campaign based on a unique and radical concept put forward 37 years earlier. The video blends some of the early 1:5th scale model tests and shows how it finally translated into a boat that peaked at 52.78 knots and averaged 49.36 knots over the 500 meter record course (subject to WSSRC ratification) some seven long years later. You can hear WSSRC commissioner Mike Ellison reading out the wind speed from the TACKTICK weather station at the timing hut throughout the run. During its last 28 day record attempt in October 2009, VESTAS SAILROCKET made ten full speed runs down the 500 meter course and hit over 50 knots in seven of them. Despite this she still had another two knots to go to beat the current outright world speed sailing record holder, Hydroptere. The team ran out of time and have decided to focus their efforts on a new boat based on all that was learnt in the development of the boat in the video. The goal remains to be the fastest in the world.
