When striving towards a goal there are mileposts by which to measure progress. Crossing the Atlantic in a sailboat requires two types of mileposts. The first is tactical in the form of specific latitude and longitude way points. These are used to plot a course to a specific location to take advantage or current, weather, or simply the shortest distance between start and finish. The other type is the psychological or feel-good mileposts. Our first feel good milepost was reached recently. We are now east of Bermuda. I think it held so much significance due to our starting out so far south. Bermuda has been visible on the chart plotter since Ft. Lauderdale. Now that little spot of islands will fade into the distance and off the plotter. Other key feel good milestones will be the halfway point and the first sight of land. Good sailing today. A cold front passed today that cleared away the fog and clouds and provided 15 knots from the NE. We are moving south again to avoid some stronger weather north. It has been really good to have Herb Hilgenberg on the radio to assist with our weather routing.

Since the introduction in 2009 of the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (ITRC) for all ships passing thorough the Gulf of Aden, cruise passengers can feel much more secure against the threat of Somali piracy. Before entering the Gulf of Aden a safety drill was conducted. For the passage ships are joining a convoy of three or four other vessels at an allotted time and location. During the passage armed naval escort ship are shadowing the convoy. The Captain was logging into the control system every four hours to give position. Before and during the passage Informative briefings for the passengers by the captain from the bridge by loudspeakers and internal TV on effective measures in place for the safety of the ship. Lookouts were in place at the top deck to look for potential pirate boat, and Brilliance of the Seas was closely followed by the patrol boat AL345 from PVI, Protection Vessels International Ltd during the entire passage of the Gulf. Some decks were closed during the passage while sun- and pool-decks were closed from sunset to sunrise – During night no cabin- or outside deck lights for three nights. – This last one means no late-night dancing under the stars for a couple of nights, but inside, it’s fun as usual.

titanic 1/160th scale at various stages roughly detailed, the ship was made by hand with only the rough demensions measured after that nothing else was measured it is all by eye, during its testing in the open ocean the battery connectors got to hot and screwed up the speed control the ship was about 60 ft from shore it slowly did 3 turns in a 80 ft circle all that with no control from the remote…. it finally after about 20mins stopped 40 ft from shore next to a pier where i had to catch the ship with a fishing rod and a weight, by this time a 40 ft tug boat came by and almost rolled the titanic lucky she’s so stable. currently gonna start a new ocean liner the Normandy it will be in 1/160 scale as well and made a similar way as the titanic. it took just over a year to get it to this point. Testing model’s to the limit is pretty fun. the ship is 5 and a half feet long, has 3- 540 motors and 3 props as u can see from some of the picture’s when the throttle is gunned it makes quite a quick take off at full speed the titanics bow comes outta the water and puts the ship on a plane..the ship has also gone partly up a few streams. leave a comment

Sailing Vessel Paikea Mist recently made the passage from Nukua’lofa to Opua New Zealand, arriving in Opua on Oct 31st, exactly 14 months to the day since leaving Victoria, BC Canada in August 2009. Paikea Mist made short work of the 1100 nm passage, arriving in Opua in five days plus change, averaging 200 nautical miles a day. We sailed the entire way on a beam reach with winds from the east south east, in the 25 knot range, with sustained winds up to 30 knots, and gusting to 34. The sea swell was up to 4 meters in height, with short periods of six seconds. At one point I had to sacrifice video quality for my own safety, needing both hands to hold on for the ride. At the very end of the video, Michael looks stoically around and says ” I think the thing we ought to do here, is shorten up the jib”. Good idea Michael!

Hugill writes: “Blow the Man Down originated in the Western Ocean Sailing Packets; it was the war-cry of the Packet Rats.” Here is the well-known halyards chantey, in a version with the more common sort of storyline about a “Flash Packet” (euphemism for a “fast woman”), which is based in an old ballad, “Ratcliffe Highway.” Like the latter, the lyrics can get as bawdy as one wishes, and I have stopped at the meeting of the two “ships”; what happens afterwards is recounted in many other forebitters and chanteys! Fighting the tide on the anniversary of D-Day as we sailed off the coast of the former WWII live fire training range at Cape Henlopen. Now a state park, this lies at the edge of the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. So now we’re an ocean-going vessel…. Not. We saw pelicans and one dolphin (though I didn’t have the camera out for the latter, naturally). Winds around 5 – 8 knotts, enough to have a good time at a slow pace, had to use the outboard a few times to get into better wind.
